CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:
Sidney’s Salsa Workout - In this highly energetic, full body workout, we explore the roots and relatives of salsa. Through isolations we gain strength, flexibility and articulate expression throughout the entire body beginning with the core. We warm up with the basic salsa footwork and move on to explore more complex rhythmic variations, stylistic embellishments and related dance styles building towards completing the class with a dynamic and fun choreography.
Dancing the Rhythms of Timba - Cuban salsa (sometimes called timba) is incredibly rich and rhythmically layered, offering us a great abundance of musical material to draw upon as dancers. This class will help you unlock the wealth of rhythms present in timba and show you how to express these rhythms with your body. This rhythmic understanding will enhance your enjoyment of the music and invigorate your dancing, both in the rueda and with a partner. We’ll dance to LIVE percussion as well as to recorded music, enabling you to improve your ear and sense of time, truly strengthening your connection to the music.
Ryan and Sidney’s Favorite Casino Moves - In this class we’ll show you our favorite moves we’ve learned from teachers in Cuba, Miami, and throughout the United States, as well as original moves of our own creation. There will be different moves taught on each night. We’ll teach two separate classes at different levels — intermediate and advanced — for each hour (one taught by Ryan and the other taught by Sidney).
Putting Son Into Salsa - Salsa is just the latest in a long lineage of Cuban dances, the most important of which is son (pronounced like the first syllable of sonar). Just as the best Cuban bands include references to this older style in their music, many of the best dancers incorporate elements of son into their salsa dancing. In this workshop, we’ll teach the fundamental steps, body movement, and turns of this strongest ancestor of salsa.
